In today’s world, tourism is one of the largest industries around the world. With the rapid growth in the lodging industry, there are approximately 202,842 hotels globally. In order to stand out from the crowd and attract more customers, many hotels are trying so hard to position themselves differently in the market, such as offering various types of services or setting up in different locations to meet the specific demand of customers. Let’s have a closer look of the most common classifications of the hotels:
1. City Centre Hotels
This kind of hotels differentiate themselves in terms of their location. They are usually located in the city centre of the town which can provide a convenient access and meet the needs of both business and leisure travellers.

This hotel is located in the Huangpu District in Shanghai, which is in the central part of the city. There are many infrastructures and facilities nearby, including various public transportations, tourists attractions and commercial buildings. For instance, some major attractions, like the People’s Square and The Bund; some famous shopping spots, like Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall and some major commercial buildings, like Shanghai Securities Co.,Ltd etc.

2. Airport Hotels
Airport hotels also differentiate themselves in terms of the location. They aim to provide the most convenient accommodation to visitors who may have early or late flights or who would like to rest while waiting for the connecting flights. They offer convenient locations, economical prices and low transportation costs so as to attract more and more guests.

Crowne Plaza Hotel Changi Airport is located right next to the Changi Airport of Singapore which provides a direct access to Terminal 3 of the airport. The room size is about 320. And it offers a wide range of services, for example, accommodation; business centre services; fitness services, such as a swimming pool and 24-hour Fitness Centre; food & beverage services, including 4 bars and restaurants; some recreation facilities, like spa, so on.

3. Resort Hotels
Resorts are usually located in remote and exotic locations. They attract leisure guests who would like to relax and engage in various recreational activities.
Example: Maldives - Diamonds Athuruga Beach & Water Villas

Location: South Ari Atoll, Athuruga Island 00130, Maldives
There are 4 room types in this resort, including the Beach Bungalows, Suite, Water Villas and Two Bedroom Water Villas. Although it does not provide full services, the core services include dining and some recreational services, like spa and diving, and last but not least, some special services, like wedding. The wedding service features the Bouquet, Ceremony, Photo-taking and Bridal make-up.

4. Freeway hotel & motel
These hotels are reasonably priced and normally are located in convenient places where guests can drive and access very easily. However, they usually have fewer room sizes than normal hotels.

The hotel is quite close to the Thomas and Mack Centreand is near the Fashion Show Mall and the Las Vegas Convention Centre. There is a total of 199 guest rooms in the hotel. They all provide free breakfast, Wi-Fi and parking to the visiting guests. The hotel also offers laundry services, a fitness centre, a business centre and an outdoor swimming pool.

5. Casino Hotels
Casino hotels also market themselves as business hotels as they include full-services, like business centre and convention. Most importantly, there is a casino inside the hotel in order to cater the needs of the customers who would like to gamble and entertain themselves.

The hotel offers full-services including the basic services, such as accommodations, dining and recreational services, like swimming pool, spa and salon. Additionally, there is a casino inside the hotel, which provides some table games and slot machines to entertain and satisfy the demand of guests. There are also exciting entertainment shows regularly, such as rock, R&B and pop music shows.

6. Convention Hotels
Convention hotels provide facilities, such as the meeting rooms, conference rooms and conventional halls in order to meet the needs of guests attending and holding exhibitions or any other activities.
Example: Saudi Arabia - Hilton Makkah Convention Hotel

The hotel offers full services, which include the basic facilities. For example, 764 guest rooms, 3 restaurants with 24-hour room service, 24-hour business centre and fitness centre. There is also an extensive event space with around 10 meeting rooms in the hotel and the largest one is about 1800 Sq. Ft.which can accommodate a maximum of 1,600 people.

7. Full-Service Hotels
These hotels offer a wide range of services, facilities and amenities, including convention and catering services. They also provide business services, such as business centre, secretarial services and in-room computers, etc.

The Ritz-Carlton, Osaka provides full range of services as mentioned in the above. For instance, it provides recreational facilities, like spa treatment and fitness centre; it also provides dining services with 6 restaurants, bars and lounges which offer multiple food and beverages. There are also venues for meeting and wedding. Business services, including a business centre, copy, fax, translation and secretarial services.

8. Economy/ Budget Hotels
Economy or budget hotels are reasonably priced and offer rates about 30% lower than the average. They offer reasonably sized, furnished and clean rooms to guests but without the frills of full services. Some of these hotels may not include the catering services or recreational facilities.

9. Boutique Hotels
Boutique hotels are well-designed with unique style, colour, decoration and architectures.
Example: Seoul, South Korea - Hotel The Designers Samseong

There are 15 designers in charge of the designs and decorations of the hotel rooms. Each room in the hotel may have different themes, some rooms are about the Beatles, some are about nature and some are about graffiti. Other facilities are also decorated in various themes. For instance, the coffee shop and the restaurant are full of the Zoo décor while the meeting room is designed in a neat and simple style.

10. Extended-Stay Hotels
These hotels aim to serve the guests who are going to stay in the hotel for a long period, at least more than a week.

This extended-stay hotel features quite a lot of special facilities, like living areas, kitchens, recreation and fitness facilities, business centre and shopping facilities. There is a market which sells grocery and basic household supplies to satisfy the needs of the long-term staying guests.

11. All-Suite Extended-Stay Hotels
All-Suite Extended-Stay Hotels typically offer additional space in the form of a lounge or a kitchenette area. These hotels aim to provide a home-feeling to guests who are staying in the hotel for a longer term due to relocating or any other reasons.

This All-Suite Extended-Stay hotel offers a home feeling to guests by equipping the hotel rooms with kitchens, free Wi-Fi, television with premium movie channels. They also provide weekly housekeeping and laundry services.

12. Condotel
It is a combination of hotel and condominium. Developers build a hotel and sell each room as condo units. The owners have the exclusive rights to the use of the units for a fixed period of time. The hotel operating company may rent them out as hotel rooms after that period.

13. Mixed-use Hotels
It is another combination of hotel and condominium, but it is different from condotel since there are residences which means real condo units that people live in.

Donald Trump bought the building in 1994 and converted it into a mixed-use of residence and hotel. There is a total of 52 floors, in which the hotel occupies the lower 22 floors while the private residences located on the upper floors. The hotel features a wide range of services, such as the dining, spa, fitness, meeting and wedding services.

14. Bed & Breakfast Inns
The owner of the accommodation will provide a clean room with breakfast to the guests. They may also offer help and suggestion to their local entertainment and sightseeing.

Learning Reflection
I really like travelling but it is definitely costly to plan for a trip. There are lots of expenses that we have to pay, including the flight tickets, food, local traffic, and the accommodation! From this week’s topic, I have learnt more about the different types of accommodations and their special features. Also, I have realized that different hotels may offer different services, and of course, they may cost differently. It is actually quite new to me as I have never imagined that there are about 14 types of hotels in the industry and each of them have their special features to attract different target groups of customers. Next time, if I go travel with friends with limited budget, I will have more choices since I have known more about the different types of hotels and can make better decision!
