Have you guys ever thought of different new trends in restaurant operations? Do you know the relationships between the new trend and the users? Here are some main channels I have figured out to be trending in 2017:
Social Media
Nowadays, it is nearly impossible for restaurants to not own a social media page, no matter Facebook, Instagram or other types of media. Social media keeps growing and influencing people’s decision making. Many of us, including me, would search the internet for some restaurants suggested by others rather than randomly search for food on the street. It is because we can save a lot of time while still enjoy food of high quality.
1. Dining guide- Openrice, Dining City, FeedMe Guru

Being the most popular dining guide in Hong Kong, I believe that many people have tried or entered Openrice. It helps people to find what they want to eat by choosing different districts, cuisine, restaurant types, preferred spending per head, etc. Once we enter all these data, Openrice will generate the well-fit restaurants with customers’ reviews and ratings.

Therefore, restaurant make good use of this website by providing coupons to website viewers, posting advertisement on Openrice to promote their restaurants. Dining City and FeedMe Guru are some of the other examples.

2. Ticket picker App- Foodgulu, New Town Plaza, YoHo Mall

In Hong Kong, as a fast paced city, people are doing everything in rush, while the living standard is increasing that we pursue the better choice always. However, when they would like to enjoy some high quality food, queuing is also necessary in this case. With the limited time, waiting makes customers to feel impatient. Therefore, some of the ticket picker applications have been launched to facilitate people’s queuing for food. Use Foodgulu as an example, it is a real time queuing app that enable guests to pick the restaurant they want and start to queue in advance. When your ticket number is almost reached, the app will send you notice, so that you can save the time from just waiting outside the restaurant for a long time without doing anything.

It also provides the QR code scanning confirmation, menu preview and mobile pre-orders. Many and many restaurants are starting to join these applications. Some Plazas have also own their own app, just like YoHo Mall and the New Town Plaza.

3. Home delivery – UberEats, Deliveroo, FoodPanda

Besides having the launch of the ticket picker app to save time from queuing, take away is also popular among Hong Kong people. As they can just make an order via the internet or phone, then all they have to do is to wait at home for the delivery. However, one of the big problem is that the waiting time would usually be very long. Use the McDelivery and PizzaHut as an example, the lead time from making order to receiving food requires at least 45 minutes.

The efficiency absolutely can not be achieved. Therefore, some Restaurant home delivery service has been launched this year, like the UberEats, Deliveroo and FoodPanda. It is an online meal ordering and delivery platform that enables guests to get the food they want, from Hong Kong restaurants they love and delivered at faster speed. More and more restaurants will join this kind of applications as they can save the cost from delivering while guests can receive and enjoy the food at a faster speed.

4. Automation – Genki Sushi Kosoku

The sushi train is Genki sushi house seems to be a gimmick to attract customers. Instead, it can be used to save the cost and increase the revenue. As the sushi train served as a front office worker, the amount of waiter can be reduced, thus the wage cost would drop. Moreover, with the automated train, food can be delivered in a faster speed, then more plates of sushi can be served per hour and the revenue would increase. Therefore, the total net profit would increase greatly as a result. Genki sushi house used to be a Japanese restaurant with many people queuing outside to wait for a seat. After they have installed the automated sushi train, the time customers spend in the restaurant would decrease as they can receive the food more quickly. In this case, more customers can be served. Therefore, it would be a hit trend in restaurant operations to increase the profit while reducing the cost.

Learning reflection
I discovered that technology has driven the main part in trends in restaurant operations. I believe that the future trends would also be related to technology. However, it also creates some drawbacks. When technology keeps advancing, the unemployment rate keeps increasing. It is no doubt that technology makes our life better, with less cost yet more efficiency. Then, our society should start thinking about how to balance the use of technology and the manpower resources. Otherwise, we would be totally replaced by technology.
